I choose the movie The Shawshank Redemption because of the realist perspective of prison life. Morgan Freeman plays Red, “the only guilt man in Shawshank.” Red is the guy that every prison has, the guy that is able to “locate certain things from time to time.” When big shot banker, Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins, comes to Shawshank State Prison in 1947, he turns regular prison life upside down with a sense of holding on to a little bit of hope. Reds first thought of Andy was “being a cool drink of water, with a silver spoon stuck up his ass,” but the two soon became close friends.
The movie touches on strong points of which we’ve learned about in class; different ethical systems, excessive force, whistle-blowers, and a lot of corruption. The movie takes place in New England and is about a big shot banker, Andy, being accused of two murders he didn’t commit, who later becomes the Wardens own personal money laundering pet. Andy had a rough start to prison life but quickly changed that when the guards and later the warden used the banker’s expertise on book keeping and money laundering. Andy made friends and turned Shawshank State Prison upside down and saved the best for last.
